13 Ways to Stop Sugar Cravings
I recently saw a thread on Facebook that started with a woman writing, “I need help. I have to stop eating sugar, as it destroying my health.” There were so many responses ranging from, “get to a doctor right away”, to “buy this product”, to “just eat it”.
Here are some of my tips:
1. Make sure you are hydrated. Start the day with 2 glasses of water and make sure you are drinking enough throughout the day.
2. Stop eating any processed foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, and artificial sweeteners.
3. Skip the coffee. If you can’t get rid of the morning coffee don’t add sugar to it. Taking a coffee break is a good idea even if it is temporary.
4. Eat good fats like avocado and coconut oil. Quick tip: I place a teaspoon of XCT Oil in my tea and this really helps crush cravings.
5. Make sure you are not eating hidden sugar. Some places to look are in jarred tomato sauce and broths.
6. Eat fresh fruit. I make a berry sorbet that is healthy and just as satisfying as any dessert.
7. Be careful with dried fruits like dates and figs. These contain a lot of sugar and could trigger cravings for more sugar.
8. Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, miso, coconut yogurt, coconut kefir, or any other fermented vegetable every day.
9. Check your protein intake and add protein to meals.
10. Try adding resistant starch to your diet. So many people are afraid of carbs. I cook potatoes then keep them in the refrigerator. You can do this with rice too. This cooking then cooling process makes the potatoes and rice into a resistant starch. Just as the name implies they resist digestion. I add a small amount to a morning egg dish or to an afternoon salad.
11. Watch out for triggers. Did you have a stressful day then indulge in something because it makes you feel better? Awareness is a great first step in conquering this.
12. Manage stress with journal writing, meditation, exercise or being outside in nature.
13. The best thing I have done personally is detoxed my body with a whole food cleanse. It has been the easiest way for me to forget about sugar. There are many other benefits from a whole food cleanse like improved skin, reduced bloat, and better energy.
