A good for you sweetener?
Blackstrap Molasses is a type of molasses that is actually a byproduct of refining sugar cane. It is a thick, dark and bittersweet liquid that contains the least sugar of all different types of molasses.
Why I use Blackstrap Molasses
I personally struggle with low ferritin and do not like to take iron pills. Ferritin is a protein that helps store iron in the body. Low ferritin means my iron stores are low. Blackstrap Molasses has 20% iron as well as calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium and selenium.
I drink 1 teaspoon of Blackstrap Molasses in water and it can also be added to smoothies, oatmeal, or in a marinade as in the following recipe:

Ingredients
- ½-1lb Wild Salmon
- 3 Tablespoons Coconut Aminos
- 1 Tablespoon Yellow Miso
- 1 Tablespoon Mirin
- 1 Tablespoon Brown Rice Vinegar
- 1 Teaspoon Hot Pepper Sesame Oil
- 1 Teaspoon Blackstrap Molasses
- 1 Teaspoon Ginger (Fresh grated or powdered)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Combine all the ingredients and whisk together.
- Coat the salmon (skin side down) and marinade in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes.
- Bake 12-15 minutes.
